Musings of a Granola Paladin

Corporations are literally stealing our governments, negotiating an international pact this week that would erase corporate regulation and create a new powerful international court system with big business as the plaintiffs. Worse, they’re doing it all in secret — unless we shine a light.

It’s called the Trans Pacific Partnership, and although it’s being disguised as a ‘trade agreement’, it’s anything but. The TPP has been shrouded in secrecy for the 5 years, even US members of Congress were denied access. But now a partial draft copy has been leaked! — giving us a chance to kill this attack on our democracy.

Here’s what we know: Big Tobacco, Big Oil, Big Pharma, Walmart and almost 600 other corporate lobbyists are all invited guests to the secret negotiations, trying to secure their piece of the pie — from powers to sue governments over anti-smoking laws, to challenging pollution protections and policing our use of the Internet. If successful, the TPP would roll back worker’s rights, environmental regulation and human rights laws, all while fattening the pockets of some of the richest companies on the planet.

But we can stop it dead in its tracks. Already a handful of key countries, like Austalia and New Zealand, are coming out to question the secretive process, and to disagree with fundamental pieces of the agreement. National outcries will threaten a government’s ability to pass the TPP at home and could destroy the confidence of negotiators, ending this destructive deal. Sign the petition on the right to stop the corporate takeover now and tell everyone — if enough of us join, partners will project our petition counter on the walls of the meeting space in real time, so negotiators can see the opposition in their countries explode.
